Welcome!

Hi and welcome to my 2008 bicycle touring blog. I am back in the United States after a seven-week bicycle ride through southern & eastern Germany, northern Austria, western Slovakia, the Czech Republic & southern Poland. In total I rode 1,872 miles or slightly more than 3,000 kilometers. This was my third long-distance bicycle trip in six years. Feel free to post a general comment where it says "comments" below.

Dear John,

I am dedicated to viewing your travel journal entries and photographs. On a long ago trip to eastern Germany I visited a concentration camp and found it to be a spritual experience as I quietly observed the conditions in which so many had been forced to endure and from which the will to survive continued. Prague was the only city I visited that survived the second world war without having to be rebuilt. It was a beautiful city where we were lodged on a boat on the Moldau River. I could hear in my mind Smetena's beautiful music "The Moldau".

Believe it or not, I am still replanting the violets (white and blue) that my gardners pulled up ten days ago thinking they were weeds. It has taken me awhile to get this done since I am clearing new locations for these lovely plants which were my mother's favorites.

Happy travels,

Love,

Sandra

Dear John,

Your mother arrived at Jennifer's yesterday and told me that Jamie and Matthew were asking for Uncle John. It appears that they think that when Grandma comes there too comes John. How special is that!

Matthew has turned into a snuggler at reading time and Jamie is talking constantly and independently wants to do everything by herself. She has told her Grandma not to help her and if Sonja goes to help her anyway Jamie goes back to the beginning of what she was attempting to do and starts all over again. So there!

I was in Dresden on a warm and beautiful evening almost a quarter of a century ago. I still remember this city's beauty after having been rebuilt following the second world war. The sadness was that this city did not have to suffer such terrible destruction.

My condolences for the passing of your Uncle Art. May he be in your thoughts as your finish your bicycle tour. I have found that those I love who have passed on live forever in my memory.

Love,

Sandra

Dear John, Having a great time with Matthew & Jamie. They are both so independent and love having Grandma's aroung. Tomorrow is Jamies's party. She is having a Pooh theme this year, so I brought Tigger, Eeyore and Pooh from home to celebrate. She already has a little Roo. Wishing you good weather and a pleasant journey back to Munich. Looking forward to the 25th. Love Mom

Dear John,

I am still following your travels and find your journal entries are getting shorter! Does this mean you are getting tired or are you too busy to write more!!

In any case I am enjoying your trip. I am heading Downtown today for an appointment and possibly lunch with a friend.

We are enjoying great weather here at home while most of the midwest is in the midst of heavy rains and 500 year flooding (lots of farms and homes have had rivers rise 10 plus feet above the highest crests ever). This will mean great hardship for thousands of people and higher food prices as time goes on.

The experts are saying this could be the "Katrina" of the midwest.

Your Dad fell in love with Jamie and Matthew and can hardly wait to make another visit. Your Mom returns home the day after tomorrow and has a wonderful visit with Jennifer and her family.

I hope the rest of your trip goes well. Wish you could stop and visit me on your way back to California.

Love,

Sandra

Hey John!!

Congratulations on completing yet another amazing journey. Your photos are gorgeous. Makes me want to travel to Europe and walk around those cities myself. Thanks for sharing your adventure on this blog.
I just got back from a journey myself. I had an educator fellowship to be part of an Earthwatch research team. We snorkeled and collected data about the conditions of coral reefs near the tiny island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. What a great time...and I learned so much. Can't wait to work on another Earthwatch team.
Take care and keep in touch-

Hi John,
I'm not sure how else to get a hold of you, but I work for a fiction publisher. This December, we will release a historical fiction book set in north central Montana, and I'm interested in including one of your photographs (the one taken in 2006 of snow on the Bear's Paw Mountains) on the back cover of the book. I'm curious to know if I could obtain permission from you to do this. We'd include a photo credit in the book as well as your website URL. Please email me at rachel@summersidepress.com.

Thank you!
